ALTHOUGH Summer is still officially with us, if it was a dinner party guest it would be polishing off the cheese and washing it down with a final glass of port. Autumn Cabs were called an hour earlier and are on their way.

Before the weather changes for the worst, this weekend is a good time to make sure your steel buildings are ready for the Autumn and Winter months.

Here is a list of three things you might want to get sorted before the weather turns:

• 1) Check that the gutters are clear of anything that will hamper the flow of rainwater off of the roof and down the drain-pipe. The leaves will soon be turning golden and falling from the trees. You can make sure these don’t clog up your guttering by installing gutter brushes. They are very easy to fit and the job will take a few moments while everything is nice and dry (unlike later on when it will be an unpleasant experience of you going up a ladder in the pouring rain to remove a mass of semi-rotten leaves).
• 2) While you’re up there, make a quick check of the gutter fixings and make sure they are in good order and all of the screws are holding the gutter clips in place.
• 3) Check your doors for gaps and potential leak points. Do the doors fit tightly? If not, brush strips are excellent for closing areas where draughts and rain might be getting through. At door openings, check for the dangers of water ingress underneath. Threshold seals are great for stopping water running underneath your roller shutter door and a wrap around door seal will ensure a tight fit between the floor and your door. Threshold seals can also be fitted to the floor at the opening of up and over garage doors. Rubber strips, brush strips and side seals can be fitted to the door frame (or the door itself in some cases) and will keep out the elements. This is the ideal time to check the caulking/sealant between wooden door frames and brickwork.
