Make the most of these rainy summer days by checking for water ingress

Okay, I think that when it comes to rainy summer days, we're probably all in the same boat - peering through the port holes longing for a break in the clouds and for the sun to come out again.

However, this weather gives you the ideal opportunity to take a good look at your building to make sure the weather isn't getting in. Are the gutters clear of leaves, twigs and other debris? Is water seeping under your doors - not just the ones you walk through every day?

Are there any signs of damp or water on the walls or ceilings?

Nothing damages a building as much as water. And it's worth remembering that the damage it causes increases dramatically as soon as the cold weather comes and the water freezes.

If there is, make a note of where this is happening. Don't wait for the winter to be upon us before doing something about it. Once the rain stops you can get out there and take the necessary steps to put things right as soon as those rain clouds blow away.

Clear out those gutters (and while you're at it, consider buying some gutter brushes to help them getting blocked again). You'll be amazed at how much more pleasant this job is when it's warm and dry,as opposed to when the cold rain is hammering down on you.

Check your doorways and windows. Woodwork can need repainting/varnishing. Also insulation brushes may need readjusting or replacing.

Finally, is water seeping under the doors? If so, you can fit a threshold seal. They're very easy to fit and are amazingly effective.

So, make the most of the bad weather and get your buildings ready while it's still nice and warm.
